The BBC reported on thousands of Vinted sellers who say they were suspended or permanently banned by automated fraud detection with no clear explanation. One seller was banned after relisting a pair of GBP 3 sandals at GBP 2. A campaign site set up by a frustrated user logged 2,609 bans or suspensions, 1,618 of them permanent, and 2,526 people who said customer service never engaged (BBC News, August 18, 2026).
One professional seller with roughly ten thousand positive reviews was banned over a used fleece, lost two weeks of trading, and was reinstated on appeal after Vinted acknowledged a mistake. Vinted says it combines trained moderation teams, member reports and detection tools, and that appeals are always reviewed by humans.
Because the mechanism is identical. A platform sees counterfeit risk, builds an automated detector, tunes it toward false positives because a missed counterfeit is a headline and a wrongly banned seller is a support ticket, and then routes the appeals into the same automation. Amazon sellers have been living inside that loop for years under different names: authenticity complaints, IP claims, sudden ASIN suppression, account health strikes.
The Vinted case is worth reading precisely because it is early and visible. A price change triggering a fraud flag is the kind of rule that looks reasonable in a spec and destroys a legitimate business in production.
The pro seller in the BBC story got his account back in two weeks. That is a fast outcome by marketplace standards, and it still cost thousands in lost sales. The damage was never the decision. It was the fourteen days of silence before the decision got reversed.
That is the number most sellers never quantify. When an ASIN goes down or an account goes quiet, the question your finance model should answer immediately is: what does a day of this cost, and which SKUs carry it? If you can only answer that after the reinstatement, you negotiated the whole appeal blind.
