What happened

Amazon told sellers this week that the 75-character product title policy applies to its own retail listings as well, and that more than 984 million titles have already been updated since the rule was announced in June 2026 (EcommerceBytes, August 7, 2026).

The start date moved from July 26 to August 3, 2026, and recommendations on non-compliant listings began rolling out on July 27. Amazon has said it will use AI to generate suggested titles, with brand owners given 14 days' notice before a recommended change is applied (EcommerceBytes, June 11, 2026).

Why it matters

The first-party detail closes the loudest objection sellers raised in June, that Amazon retail would keep long keyword-stuffed titles while third-party sellers were trimmed to 75 characters. Symmetry does not make the policy easier to live with, but it does remove the argument that this is a competitive handicap rather than a catalogue clean-up.

The part sellers keep missing is where the keywords go. Amazon's own FAQ states that Item name and Item highlights are both search inputs and that neither is prioritized over the other, so terms moved out of a title into Item highlights remain indexed. The risk is not lost indexing, it is a badly written replacement title that reads worse on mobile search results and drops click-through rate.

Doing nothing is a decision. Listings stay active and editable through the rollout, but at the end of the 14-day window Amazon's AI writes the title instead of your brand team.

What to change in the next 72 hours

  1. Rank your catalogue by revenue, not by ASIN count. The top 20 SKUs by contribution deserve a human-written title. The tail can take the recommendation.
  2. Rewrite to 75 characters yourself before the notice lands. Brand, product type, then the single differentiator a buyer scans for. Drop repeated keywords, size lists and promotional words.
  3. Move every displaced keyword into Item highlights. Not the bullets alone. Item highlights is the field Amazon names as a search input.
  4. Track sessions and CVR per ASIN for 14 days after each edit. A title change is a listing experiment whether you treat it as one or not.
