Amazon Buy Box Lost - 30-Minute Diagnostic Guide 2026
Losing the Buy Box cuts unit sales 70 to 95 percent the same day. Four causes explain almost every loss. Here is the 30-minute diagnostic and the recovery moves ranked by speed.

Roughly 80 to 90 percent of Amazon sales flow through the Buy Box (now called the Featured Offer). When it flips away from you, unit sales on that ASIN drop 70 to 95 percent the same day. This guide walks through the four causes that account for almost every Buy Box loss, the 30-minute diagnostic that finds the trigger, and the monitoring loop that catches the flip before the day's revenue is gone.
In short
•The Buy Box is recalculated continuously. A one-cent competitor change can flip it, and the flip is often noiseless in Seller Central until the daily sales snapshot rolls in.
•Four causes explain the majority of Buy Box losses: competitor undercut, seller performance metric threshold, inventory dropping below the regional cover level, or Amazon entering the offer.
•The correct KPI is Buy Box recovery time in hours, not average Buy Box share. A 24-hour flip on a $100k/month SKU is $2k to $3k of lost revenue.
•Same-day detection is the whole game. Weekly reviews catch the loss after the money is already gone.
•Nova's Listing Health Scanner flags Buy Box loss per ASIN per marketplace next to trailing P&L impact, so the operator sorts by revenue at risk, not by status flag.
Our take
If you lose the Buy Box today
Run the 30-minute diagnostic in this order: Featured Offer eligibility page, Account Health metrics (last 7 days), price vs. winning offer, inventory across regions. One of the four is the answer 90 percent of the time. Fix the cause, do not chase the symptom.
Best fit if
•Brand owners running FBA where the Buy Box is the primary sales channel
•Operators or agencies monitoring 20+ ASINs where Buy Box share is a KPI
•Finance teams reconciling day-to-day revenue drops that PPC changes don't explain
Skip if
•Resellers on shared-catalog ASINs where multiple offers rotate by design
•Brands with a same-day Buy Box alert already wired to on-call
The Featured Offer, still called the Buy Box in seller conversation, is the offer highlighted on the product detail page with the yellow Add to Cart button. It rotates between eligible sellers, weighted by landed price, fulfillment method, seller performance metrics, and inventory availability at the customer's regional fulfillment center. Amazon documents the mechanics in the Featured Offer help article.
Roughly 80 to 90 percent of Amazon marketplace sales flow through it. Losing it collapses unit sales on the ASIN 70 to 95 percent the same day. On a $100k/month SKU, that is $2,300 to $3,200 in lost daily revenue while the flip persists.
The four causes that explain almost every Buy Box loss
Competitor undercut. Another eligible seller listed a lower landed price. Most common on shared-catalog ASINs and on branded ASINs with a hijacker (covered in the hijacker guide).
Seller performance threshold. One of your metrics crossed the eligibility line: order defect rate over 1 percent, late shipment rate over 4 percent, cancellation rate over 2.5 percent, or an Account Health issue.
Regional inventory shortage. Days-of-cover fell below the FC region's threshold, derating your offer for shoppers in that region. This causes partial Buy Box loss (some regions, not all), which looks noisier in dashboards than a full flip.
Amazon entered the offer. On some catalogs, Amazon Retail lists the product itself. When it does, its own offer typically wins the Buy Box until it stocks out.
The 30-minute diagnostic
Run this order every time, on the ASIN with the biggest revenue drop first:
Featured Offer eligibility. Open the ASIN's detail page in Seller Central. If the eligibility flag is red or amber, the cause is a seller-performance metric or Account Health issue.
Account Health, last 7 days. Order defect rate, late shipment rate, cancellation rate, valid tracking rate. Anything crossing a threshold in the last week is a candidate cause.
Price vs. winning offer. Compare your landed price (product + shipping) to the current Buy Box winner. A gap of 1 percent or more is often enough.
Inventory per region. Days-of-cover in each FC region. A national average can hide a region-level shortage that partially derates you.
Read the sales pattern, not the flag
A full Buy Box loss looks like a cliff in the daily sales chart. A regional partial loss looks like a soft 20 to 40 percent drop that persists. Both look like Buy Box events; only one requires a competitor response. The pattern in the daily chart tells you which diagnostic to run first.
Listing Health Scanner flags the Buy Box loss per ASIN per marketplace with the competing offer price and the SKU-level revenue at risk.
Nova monitors Buy Box share per ASIN per marketplace and flips a Listing Health Scanner alert the day it moves off you. The alert is joined against the trailing P&L so the operator sees revenue at risk in the same view. Full spec on the Listing Health Scanner feature page.

Daily P&L heatmap: the Buy Box flip shows up as a same-day revenue drop while PPC spend stays flat, which is the classic listing-event fingerprint.
Recovery moves, ranked by speed
Match or beat the winning landed price (only if unit economics still work). Fastest possible recovery, often inside the hour.
Restock the shorted FC region if the loss is inventory-driven. Recovery within 3 to 10 days depending on inbound speed.
Resolve the seller-performance metric if that is the trigger. Recovery takes 7 to 30 days depending on the metric's rolling window.
File the hijacker takedown if a hijacker caused the undercut. Recovery in 24 to 72 hours with Brand Registry.
Wait Amazon out if Amazon Retail entered. There is no lever; monitor stock-out and reprice to win when they run down.
Contribution margin per SKU decides whether option one is even on the table. Pricing to match a hijacker below your cost floor turns a Buy Box event into a P&L event, which is why contribution-margin visibility has to sit next to the Listing Health Scanner alert.
Frequently asked questions
Something changed, usually one of: a competitor undercut, seller performance metrics slipped, inventory dropped below the FC-region threshold, or Amazon entered the offer at a lower price.
Check Featured Offer eligibility, review the last 7 days of Account Health, compare your price to the winning offer, and confirm inventory across regions. Nine out of ten cases surface here.
Yes. Low inventory derates offers, especially in high-velocity categories. Days-of-cover under 14 in a fast-moving SKU is a common trigger.
Roughly 80 to 90 percent of Amazon sales flow through the Buy Box, so unit sales typically drop 70 to 95 percent per day the Buy Box stays lost.
The bottom line
Buy Box loss is a same-day revenue event where the diagnostic is short and the recovery is only expensive if you wait. Run the four-check diagnostic in order, choose the recovery move that respects contribution margin, and put a same-day alert on the ASIN. Nova's Listing Health Scanner does the alerting; the diagnostic and the reprice call stay yours.
