How does Nova read and place Amazon fees?

Nova reads every fee from the transactions Amazon posts to your account through the Finances API, the same money that lands in your settlements. It maps 156 kinds of Amazon transaction lines: 135 costs in four categories, 19 deductions from sales, and 2 kinds of other sales. Each fee is then placed on the product it belongs to.

Where do the fees come from?

From the Finances API, refreshed every hour. A fee counts on the day Amazon posts it, in the marketplace's time zone. Nova does not estimate fees from a rate card: the P&L shows what Amazon charged.

Amazon's own per-SKU fee preview (SKU economics, from Data Kiosk) is read too, daily. Nova uses it only to place a fee that Amazon billed without saying which product it was for.

What are the four categories?

CategoryKinds of linesExamples
Variable costs72Referral fee, FBA fulfillment fee, closing fees, digital services fee, refund administration, A-to-z and chargeback refunds
Product costs24Monthly and long-term storage, inbound placement and transportation, AWD storage and processing, labeling, prep, polybagging
One-offs27Removals and disposals, deals and coupons, Vine, inventory reimbursements and their clawbacks, inbound defect fee
Account costs12Subscription fee, paid services, EPR eco fees, bad debt

Refunds of the item price, shipping and gift wrap are deductions: they reduce Net sales, they are not costs.

How does a fee reach a product?

MethodWhenShare of the 156 lines
DirectThe transaction carries the SKU: referral and fulfillment fees, most refunds and reimbursements82
From Amazon's reportStorage, long-term storage, removals and liquidations, placed with Amazon's own detail report4
By sales shareThe fee is billed to the marketplace or the account: subscription, coupons, deals, AWD70

A fee shared by sales goes to each product in proportion to its sales that day, in that marketplace.

Why can a day show positive Amazon fees?

Credits post through the same transactions as charges. A large shipping label refund, an inventory reimbursement or a fee correction can outweigh a day's charges and turn the day's net fees positive. The fee lines show which credit it was.

What happens when Amazon adds a new fee?

Nova checks every day for transaction lines it has not mapped yet. A new kind of line is reviewed and mapped to a category before it reaches the P&L, so it never lands silently in the wrong place.
