How does Nova apply your cost of goods?

Amazon does not know what your products cost you, so Nova takes that figure from you: a landed cost per unit, by SKU and region, valid from a date. Each unit sold takes the cost in force on its sale day, in its region. Cost of goods is subtracted from Net sales to give Gross profit.

What can you enter?

FieldMeaning
Landed cost per unitWhat one unit costs you once it is ready to ship to Amazon
Manufacturing, freight, dutiesThe same landed cost in three lines, optional. When you enter them, the P&L shows the three lines.
Valid fromThe date the cost starts. A new cost with a later date replaces the old one from that day, and past days keep the old one.
CurrencyThe currency you buy in, converted at the daily rate. See Currencies.
FIFO batchA quantity and its cost. Units sold use the oldest batch first.

For each SKU and day, a FIFO batch applies first, then the fixed cost in force. A sold SKU with neither counts at 0.

How do regions share costs?

You enter costs by region. Each of the three Amazon regions, North America, Europe and Far East, has one primary marketplace: the one that sold the most over the last 24 months. The other marketplaces of the region use the primary's costs, unless you enter their own costs or tell them to stop.

In Europe, the EU marketplaces share one pool of costs, and each country can set its own cost for a SKU on top of it. The UK can be the primary of the region.

Order of priority for a SKU
1The cost entered for this marketplace
2The cost of the marketplace it inherits from
3The EU pool, for an EU marketplace

What happens to a SKU without a cost?

It sells at a cost of 0, so its Gross profit and Net profit are overstated. The COGS page counts the SKUs sold in the last 24 months that have no cost, region by region, and its Missing view lists them. Fill them before you read margins.

How do you enter costs?

  • In the app: the COGS page, line by line or with Add COGS.
  • By spreadsheet: download the template for a region, fill it, upload it. Rows are matched on the SKU and merged into what exists. You see what changes before you confirm.
  • From your AI assistant: through the MCP. It shows the changes first, and nothing is saved until you confirm.

Worked example

A SKU with a landed cost of $6.00 from 1 January and $6.60 from 1 May, selling 100 units in April and 100 in May:

MonthUnitsUnit costCost of goods
April100$6.00$600
May100$6.60$660

Ask your AI

Which SKUs sold in the last 30 days have no cost of goods, and how much revenue do they represent?
  • How the P&L is builtThe lines of Nova's P&L from sales to net profit, what each one takes off, which day each amount lands on, and how costs are grouped.
  • Amazon feesWhere Nova's Amazon fees come from, the four cost categories, how each fee reaches a product, and what happens when Amazon adds a new fee.
  • Currencies and exchange ratesHow Nova converts sales, fees and ad spend from each marketplace currency into your reporting currency, which rate it uses, and why past figures do not move.
