The rate is the easy part

Knowing that your category is 15% does not tell you what you paid. Promotions, price tests, shipping charges and category changes all move the number. Nova reads the fee Amazon actually took on each order and puts it in your P&L per SKU.

  • Referral fees are the largest single Amazon cost on most SKUs, ahead of fulfillment
  • Tiered categories change rate mid-catalog, so one assumed percentage misprices half your products
  • The $0.30 minimum quietly wrecks the unit economics of cheap items
  • Category re-classification by Amazon changes your rate without warning

How Amazon referral fees work

Amazon takes its referral fee on the total amount the buyer pays, which includes shipping and gift wrap. It is charged whether you fulfill through FBA or ship yourself, and it is deducted before anything else reaches your account. For most sellers it is the single largest cost line after cost of goods.

The complication is tiering. Clothing moves through 5%, 10% and 17% as price rises. Jewelry drops from 20% to 5% above $250. Furniture, electronics accessories and compact appliances all switch rate at a threshold. If your catalog straddles one of those thresholds, a single blended percentage in a spreadsheet will overstate margin on some SKUs and understate it on others.

Referral fees sit alongside fulfillment fees and storage fees in your real unit economics. To see all of them together against COGS and ad spend, use the profit margin calculator or connect your account and let Nova reconcile it from settlement data.

The P&L view captures everything Amazon-related

The P&L view is the big one. It captures everything Amazon-related with the granularity to track down every unexpected expense, giving me a real profit statement I can run the business off of. No more guessing margins or waiting for end-of-month reconciliation.

Just go for it. You won't regret it

The Nova team has built something truly special. The days of clunky Looker Studio dashboards are over. They are communicative and collaborative, and work hard to make the platform as helpful as possible for their users.

Replaced hours of reporting with one dashboard

I manage multiple brands and Cockpit, P&L and Day-to-Day are now part of my daily workflow. What used to take hours across multiple tools I now see in one place. Antoine and Maxime are clearly building this with real seller challenges in mind, and they listen.

Amazon referral fees: frequently asked questions

Rates, tiers, minimums and what actually lands on your settlement.

The referral fee is the commission Amazon takes on every sale, charged as a percentage of the total price the buyer pays, including shipping and gift wrap. Most categories sit at 15%, but consumer electronics is 8%, automotive is 12%, and several categories change rate above a price threshold.
No. 15% is the default for the largest categories such as home and kitchen, toys, sports and office products, but rates run from 3% to 45%. Clothing is tiered at 5%, 10% and 17% by price, jewelry drops from 20% to 5% above $250, and Amazon device accessories are 45%.
Yes. Amazon applies a $0.30 minimum referral fee per item on most categories. On low-priced items this makes the effective rate much higher than the headline percentage, which is why sub-$5 SKUs so often fail to make money.
Yes. The fee is calculated on the total sale price, which includes item price plus any shipping and gift wrap charges the buyer pays. It is not calculated on the price after promotions or coupons.
No. Referral fees are identical for FBA and FBM. What changes between the two is fulfillment cost, storage and returns handling, which is what the FBA vs FBM comparison is really about.
They appear on your settlement reports, line by line. Nova reads those reports and maps referral fees to each SKU in your P&L, so category re-classifications, price changes and promotions show up as real numbers rather than an assumed percentage.
